Privacy Policy

Overview

echo is a mood tracking app designed to be anonymous by default. We do not collect your name, email address, or any information that could identify you as a person. This policy explains what data we do collect and why.

What we collect

• Anonymous user ID — a randomly generated identifier stored locally on your device. It is never linked to your name, email, or any personal account.
• Mood entries — the mood score you log (a number from 1–7), an optional context tag (Work, Home, Social, Health), and a timestamp.
• Notes (optional) — you can attach a short free-text note to a mood ("how you feel or why"). If you write one, it is stored with that mood entry and may be sent to our optional AI feature to surface gentle patterns (see Echo insights below). Notes are your own words — only write what you're comfortable storing.
• Approximate location (optional) — when you log a mood, your GPS coordinates are slightly randomised (±~2.5 km) before being stored, so your exact location is never recorded. An approximate city or region name derived from those coordinates is stored alongside. Location is used only to place your anonymous dot on the community map and to show local mood trends. If you deny location permission, your moods are still logged — they simply won't appear on the map.
• Weather — the general weather condition at the time you log (e.g. sunny, rainy), retrieved from your approximate location, so you can see how weather relates to your mood.
• Bug reports (optional) — if you report a problem from within the app, the message you write and a screenshot you choose to attach are sent to us by email so we can help.
• Saved Sparks — quotes you bookmark are stored only on your device using local storage. They are not uploaded to our servers.

What we do not collect

• Name, email address, or phone number
• Account credentials of any kind
• Your contacts, microphone, or camera
• Your photo library — we only receive a screenshot if you deliberately attach one to a bug report
• Precise GPS location
• Any data from children under 13

How we use your data

• To display your mood history, streaks, and statistics within the app — visible only to you.
• To place your anonymous mood dot on the community map, visible to other users without any identifying information.
• To show community-level mood trends (e.g. average mood in your region today).
• To select a relevant daily Spark quote based on your mood from the previous day.
• To send you notifications (such as gentle reminders) if you enable them. Delivery uses a push token provided by Expo.

Echo insights (AI)

echo includes an optional feature — Echo — that reflects patterns back to you in plain language. When you open it, a summary of your recent moods, tags and notes is sent to Google's Gemini API to generate the reflection. This data is processed only to produce your insight; under Google's API terms it is not used to train Google's models. Echo does not run unless you open it, and you can simply not use it if you'd rather your notes stay only in the app.

Data storage

Mood data is stored in Google Firebase Firestore, a cloud database operated by Google LLC. Data is stored in the EU region where possible. Firebase's privacy policy is available at firebase.google.com/support/privacy.

Your anonymous user ID and saved Sparks are stored locally on your device and are not transmitted to any server.

Data retention

Mood entries are retained as long as you use the app. You are in control of your data at any time from within the app:

• Export — download a copy of all your entries as a CSV file (Settings → Export).
• Start Fresh — permanently delete all of your mood data from our servers. This also stops your backup code from working and cannot be undone.

You can also delete your data by contacting us. Because entries are anonymous, we use your local user ID (your backup code, visible in app Settings) to identify your data for deletion — please include it in your request.

Third-party services

Children's privacy

echo is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect any data from children. If you believe a child has used the app, please contact us and we will delete the associated anonymous data.

Your rights

You have the right to request deletion of your anonymous mood data at any time. Since we do not hold personal information, we cannot identify users by name or email — please use your in-app user ID when contacting us.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. The date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
